Super Sunshine Blogger Award #2!

Apparently my recent return to the Brink of Gaming made some waves (or at least a few small ripples) in the ocean of the internet. It was phenomenal getting back in the saddle during Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary month and throwing out bi-weekly content centered around one of my favorite video game franchises, but it was even more fun getting to interact with everyone once more and hear all about your own Pokémon stories and experiences! Blogging for me isn’t about just tossing out my own thoughts- it’s more fun hearing back from others too!

Meghan Plays Games and The Gamer with Glasses both reached out several times with their Pokémon preferences, and both even decided to nominate me for a Sunshine Blogger Award! Thanks, friends! 🙂 For those who don’t know, the Sunshine Blogger Award is shared in the blogosphere and involves answering the asker’s questions, then writing more questions and tagging more bloggers as a means of connecting the community and getting to know each other better!

I always love participating in community challenges and events like this, so without further ado, let’s check out their questions! We will start with Meghan Plays Games!

-In the spirit of the 25th anniversary of Pokémon: if you were the Champion of your region, which Pokémon would be on your team of 6?

Oh man! Even coming in hot from all my posts for Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary, this is still a tough decision. I’m no pro Pokémon battler, but if I’m going for actual effectiveness and having a well-rounded team of favorites, I’d choose Gyarados, Scizor, Nidoking, Tyranitar, Gogoat, and Electivire. But this answer would probably change every time you ask me 😛

-How do you feel about presentations like Sony’s State of Play and Nintendo Directs? Love em or hate em? Why?

I’ve always really enjoyed the presentations from different companies on their upcoming games- it’s always a little dot of excitement to look forward to (even if some people ruin it with outlandish predictions and temper tantrums)! I do miss the overwhelming amount of news that came from events like E3, Gamescom, TGS, etc., so hopefully we will see a return to form at some point in the near future.

-Video game movies are usually terrible, but which game would you like to see adapted on the big screen? Any dream cast members?

Maybe it’s a cheat answer, but I would love to see a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic movie! That game had an incredible narrative and fun characters. Virtually anyone could portray the main character (since it’s a custom avatar), but I don’t really have anyone in mind for any of the other parts either. I just love the idea of it being made!

-If you were a video game character that had to use a mundane item (i.e. an umbrella) as a weapon, what would you use?

My mundane character weapon would be a laptop computer. It does minimal physical damage, but I can type up “spells” to use against enemies in battle.

-Have you picked up any new hobbies during the pandemic? If so, talk about it!

It’s not a new hobby, per se, but I have become more diligent about reading within the last year or so. I really cut back on my reading in early adulthood and I wanted to change that, especially given how much I loved it from childhood all through college. Fantasy, horror, and fiction are my go-to genres- surprise, surprise! 😛

-How did you get into video games in the first place?

When I was 4, my step-dad hooked up his NES and showed me Super Mario Bros. I was hooked!

-Who is your least favourite video game character of all time?

Micah from Red Dead Redemption 2 is one awful, despicable, obnoxious, grating, annoying, irritating, yellow-bellied, slime-eating, miserable wiper of other peoples’ bottoms. I wanted Arthur to quick-draw and blast him between the eyes the very first time he came on-screen.

-Does pineapple belong on pizza?

NO.

-A lot of video games incorporate some form of cooking – if you had to cook a signature recipe in a game, what would you choose? What stats would it boost/what would it do for you?

My signature dish would be the Cereal of Apotheosis. As soon as you crunch it down and slurp that final sip of milk, you gain temporary damage/effect immunity to everything. The only drawback is you can’t use any other items for an extended period after consuming it. It’s basically a Hail Mary item.

-Has there ever been a game that you decided to walk away from before completing? If so, why?

Several, unfortunately. The biggest “why” is usually that the games get bogged down in their own systems and take an eternity to get through. Wargroove, CrossCode, and Octopath Traveler are the most recent ones I’ve given up on because they take forever to get anything done and the payoff is usually very small.

-Have you ever been talked down to, or insulted for playing a certain game or genre? How did you respond?

I was teased all through grade/junior high/high school for enjoying video games in general, specifically anything Nintendo related. Thankfully I shrugged most of it off, but there was a period in late high school/early college when I didn’t play any Mario or Pokémon games. But I wised up and stopped caring shortly thereafter 😉

—- Now on to the questions from The Gamer With Glasses! —-

-Favorite Video Game Developer?

I might get some flak for it, but I love Bethesda Game Studios. They have nearly consistently put out quality open-world adventures that allow for a great deal of player customization and choice, letting players craft their own narratives rather than requiring them to follow a set path. Every studio takes missteps sometimes (a la Fallout 76), but I am confident they will right the ship with Starfield and TES 6…when they come out in a hundred years 😛

-Worst Game You’ve Ever Played and Why?

I’ve played LOTS of bad games in my lifetime,

-What Video Game Series Do You Want Remade?

Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie are some of my favorite games for the N64. Toys for Bob’s Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and Super Mario Odyssey showed that adventure-platformers still have a firm place in the game-o-sphere. Rare has been dragging their feet on the B-K franchise for years. Maybe Banjo’s inclusion in Smash is a sign that there is still life in the franchise, somewhere deep in the dungeons of Rare?

-What is One Game You Think is Underrated?

Fallout 4 got so much grief for not being “Fallout: New Vegas 2” and providing more linear dialogue options. I can’t fault a game for “not” doing something- I had a blast with the game from start to finish, Level 1 to Level 50 or 51 (I can’t remember precisely). What I do remember is having an amazing time exploring the ruins of Boston, meeting interesting allies, using lots of exciting guns to kill Super Mutants, and making a ridiculously-powerful Tuxedo with bulletproof mesh. I was the James Bond of the post-apocalypse!

-What is the First Video Game You Played?

My first video game was my step-dad’s copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES. I played it in 1994, well after its time, but it was still an appropriate introduction to the world of video games!

-Pokémon, Digimon, or Neither?

It probably surprises nobody after February that I would side with Pokémon in this competition. I did enjoy both immensely as a child, but Pokémon always won out.

-What Would Your Dream Video Game Console or PC Be Like?

My dream console is a super-powered Nintendo Switch- bigger and more durable Joy-Cons, better portable resolution (not that its bad now), 4K resolution when docked, and better processing to handle current-gen games. The Switch is already one of my favorite consoles of all time in the few years since its release and fine-tuning it with a “Super Switch” would only add more fuel to my fire!

-What’s Your Best Blog Post?

I don’t like to toot my own horn, but my favorite piece I’ve ever written is Anxiety and Gaming. It details my lifelong journey with anxiety, how it impacted by life even into video games, and how I’ve learned to cope with it throughout the years. It remains my most cherished, personal post of my blogging career.

-What Got You Into Blogging?

I started The Brink of Gaming to talk about my love of video games and to meet new people with the same interests, hearing their stories as I share my own. A few years later and I’ve definitely accomplished that goal! I might not blog regularly like I used to, but I’m still here, always lurking in the shadows of WordPress 😛

That’s all for my answers, but I’m going to leave off with a few questions of my own and tag a few lucky victi- I mean, winners! 😉

The Dragon’s Tea Party
Double Jump
Strange Girl Gaming
The Hannie Corner
A Geeky Gal

I’m going to trim back my questions to just a handful. Don’t feel compelled to join in, but I would love to see your answers and keep the train rolling!

1. Has working on your blog made an impact on your personal/professional life in any way? If so, how?

2. If you could take part in creating the next entry of your favorite video game franchise, what franchise would it be and what would you contribute to it?

3. Out of all your hobbies and self-care activities, what has helped you cope with the COVID pandemic the most?

4. While writing, what is your drink of choice to keep next to you (if any)?

5. Team Mario or Team Sonic?

Thanks for reading!

  1. Great answers! It’s good to hear you’ve gotten back into reading lately – it’s a great hobby to have. Also have to agree with your choice of Micah – I kind of forgot about him, but he really is a top tier scumbag.
