Question of the Week #34: What Single-Player Series Should Get a Multiplayer Spin-off?

There’s not much I love more than a solid, single-player gaming experience with a good story and fun gameplay. But even then, sometimes I find myself thinking, “Dang, I’d love to have a friend playing this with me!” Taking an adventure meant for one and expanding it for multiple people is a thought that has captured my imagination on countless occasions, and in several series to boot.

Since The Elder Scrolls scratched this itch a bit with The Elder Scrolls Online, I’d have to shift my focus to a different series that I’ve loved for far longer: The Legend of Zelda. And yes, technically we have had this a few times between the Four Swords games and Triforce Heroes. But I’m referring to the 3D games. Can you imagine the fun and excitement of exploring an open-world Hyrule like in Breath of the Wild with a friend at your side? Puzzles would have new possibilities for solving, and taking on large groups of enemies with an ally, along with the possibility for diversions and flanking strategies, would be absolutely incredible! Throw in a character creator and non-breakable weapons and Nintendo would have a sure-fire Game of the Year on their hands!

What single player adventures would you love to see translated into multiplayer? Let me know with a comment below! Thanks for reading, and game on!

  1. I would spend all my money to play the hypothetical game you’re describing.

As for what I would choose, I’ve often thought about how nice it would be if the main Pokémon titles had you travelling in a party like in the anime, as opposed to a little kid travelling by themselves.

It would be interesting to see how co-op could be implemented to achieve this, with practice battles against each other, the option to have double battles against the trainers you meet, and maybe even some level of cooperative puzzle-solving in the over world?

Perhaps I’m the only one who thinks this sounds like an interesting concept, but that’s what I think anyway! 🙂

    1. I would love this idea! Pokémon Let’s Go had a VERY SMALL implementation of co-op like this, but only enough to truly whet the appetite. I hope your idea sees the light of day at some point! I’m sold!

  2. I don’t care for multiplayer myself, but the idea of a multiplayer version of an SRPG like Disgaea would be interesting. Sort of like a massive game of chess where the pieces are all super-powerful demons with ridiculous attacks.

  3. Witcher is the only series that comes to my mind. It would so nice to finally be allowed to create your own character, make at a more-or-less ordinary human (or dwarf, or elf, or else) character with a profession different than a monster-hunting mutant with superpowers.
