Question of the Week #31: What Was the First Video Game You Ever Played?

Nostalgia is a powerful feeling. It’s very common to be attached to the very first thing of a certain type that we experience and always hold a special fondness for it, savoring it in a special place where memories and imagination mingle. Today, as most days on this blog, I want to hear about your nostalgia with video games: what was the very first video game you ever played?

My entry to the medium was way back in the early 1990s with Super Mario Bros. on the NES. I was introduced to it by my stepdad and I became enamored with joining the two plumbers on their quest through the Mushroom Kingdom. It was many years before I was able to actually beat the game and I was so proud when I finally got to Princess Toadstool in that final castle! While the original Super Mario Bros. is not my favorite entry, it will always hold a special place for me as my gateway game.

What about you? What was the first video game you played? Do you still play it today, and is it your favorite of that particular franchise? Let me know with a comment below! Thanks for reading!

  1. Aside from playing Zelda on the NES for a whopping 2 minutes because I was 5 and my big brother was a jerk, I think my first true game I played was weirdly Animaniacs on the SNES. I loved that game to death, although it’s been a long while since I’ve played it.
