Facepalms and Failures- Thalmor Embassy Embarrassment

Hello all! I was reflecting recently on how many times I’ve failed in games, whether it was biffing a tough level or screwing up a play-through of a larger game. I thought it might be fun to share some of the biggest blunders I’ve had over the years in a periodic segment that I’m going to call ‘Facepalms and Failures.’ Some of these stories might be longer, and some might be quite brief! Rest assured that each of these scenarios will have caused me a headache in some way, shape, or form, so please enjoy my moments of misery from the past! 😛

I wanted to start off with a game near and dear to my heart: my beloved Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This post will contain some slight story spoilers, so if you haven’t played the game and don’t want anything ruined, be warned! Although I’d be surprised if many people hadn’t played Skyrim who really wanted to by this point…

Early on in the main quest, the Dragonborn is tasked by Delphine with invading the Thamor (High Elf) Embassy to investigate the possibility of their involvement with the return of dragons to Skyrim. Before venturing to this remote location for the party, you are tasked with a rendezvous with Malborn: a wood elf who was wronged by the Thalmor and wants to get revenge by helping you. He agrees to smuggle your armor, weapons, and any other items you need into the Embassy’s backroom so that you can enter the party unsuspected. However, this is where things went wrong for me.

You see, I accidentally exited the inventory swap before giving him anything because for whatever reason at the time, I didn’t realize that he would be getting my items to me during the mission! So I went forth with my mission and infiltrated the party fully believing that Delphine would be getting my items to me through Malborn…despite the fact that I hadn’t given HIM the equipment in question! Imagine my surprise when I opened the inventory chest only to discover NOTHING!

Now I’m sure you’re wondering at this point, “But Brink, why didn’t you just reload the game and retry?” Well, I had the same thought right about then! The problem was that my autosaves post-dated the failed inventory swap, and my last manual save was from several hours beforehand. I faced an important decision: to re-do several hours of adventuring and quests, or push through without my heavy armor and two-handed weapons? I had invested no skills into magic whatsoever, so my only recourse was to try and push through with whatever gear I could snag along the way.

I tried and failed several times: my fists were not well-suited for the Thalmor’s magical affinities, even with the basic ‘Fus Ro Dah’ shout to help me. But then I had an epiphany: I was a Companion. A bearer of the Beast Blood. These pesky foes couldn’t stop a werewolf! So I unleashed my primal rage (which is also an amazing fighting game for the Sega Genesis/SNES) upon them and quickly brought the mission to an end with howls and knock-down swipes, despite a few close calls due to my low level and small health pool.

I was fortunate that I was able to complete the mission without the use of my equipment, as it could have thrown quite a wrench in my journey! Have you ever had any major hiccups with progress while playing Skyrim? Let me know with a comment below! I’d love to hear your fellow tales of woe! Thanks for reading, friends, and game on!
