Question of the Week #25: What Video Game Has Your Favorite Cover Art?

Marketing is a crucial part of selling video games. Without the proper advertising, even the most well-received games face the potential of falling flat on their faces and not earning enough money to justify further entries in a series. One such method of communicating a game’s appeal is through its cover art, which can range from abstract symbolism, straight-forward screenshots, or perhaps most common, a prominently displayed protagonist front and center. I would be lying if I said I’ve never chosen to play a game based on its cover art alone.

If I had to choose my own favorite, it would have to be the darkly-vibrant presence of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. The design of the titular mask has become such an icon, with its ornate coloring and spiky silhouette pulled together by a deep purple hue. The box art only capitalizes further on its harrowing legacy with the pitch-black backdrop: a perfect symbol of the devastation that Majora plans to unleash on Termina.

What is your favorite box art from a video game? Feel free to include a picture if you want! I’d love to see your own picks! Thanks for reading!

  1. Hard to pick one single favourite, but one of my favourites would be the Xbox 360 cover for Eternal Sonata. I wasn’t a huge fan of JRPGs, but the pastoral, gorgeous cover made me pick up the game – still one of my fav JRPGs to this day!
